Data centres were no longer simply buildings filled with servers. They had become strategic national assets supporting economic growth, technological innovation and international competitiveness. complementary elements of a broader Latin American digital infrastructure ecosystem. Artificial intelligence remained the common thread connecting every discussion.
Traditional cloud adoption had already transformed enterprise IT over the previous decade, but AI had accelerated demand beyond earlier expectations. Organisations now required infrastructure capable of supporting graphics processing units, high-density computing environments and ever-growing datasets. Those technical requirements inevitably shifted attention towards power generation, cooling technologies and long-term sustainability. Consequently, conversations about artificial intelligence quickly became conversations about energy.
Delegates devoted considerable attention to electricity availability, transmission capacity and renewable generation because every participant recognised that future AI expansion depended as much upon access to reliable power as advances in computing technology. This represented a profound change in the industry’ s priorities.
Historically, technology conferences focused primarily on processors, networking equipment and software platforms. In Santiago, discussions increasingly revolved around megawatts, substations, transmission infrastructure and energy resilience. Those subjects reflected the reality that AI infrastructure could not exist without significant investment in supporting utilities. Latin America possessed several important advantages.
The region had abundant renewable energy resources, including hydroelectric generation, solar capacity and rapidly expanding wind projects. Countries such as Chile and Brazil had already demonstrated that renewable electricity could support industrial-scale developments while helping operators achieve ambitious sustainability objectives.
For hyperscale cloud providers, access to clean energy had evolved from a desirable feature into a commercial necessity. Customers increasingly expected measurable environmental performance while investors demanded longterm resilience against rising energy costs and regulatory pressures.
That trend explained why renewable energy developers occupied such a prominent position throughout the conference alongside cloud providers, equipment manufacturers and data centre specialists. Another recurring theme involved data sovereignty.
Governments, financial institutions, healthcare providers and other regulated industries increasingly wanted sensitive information processed and stored within national borders. Artificial intelligence only reinforced that requirement because organisations viewed proprietary datasets as valuable strategic assets requiring greater control.
Instead of relying solely upon overseas facilities, countries across Latin America increasingly invested in local digital infrastructure capable of supporting both regulatory compliance and business innovation.
Building regional capacity therefore became about far more than reducing application latency. It formed part of broader Digital Transformation strategies designed to strengthen economic resilience, encourage innovation and improve national competitiveness in an increasingly AIdriven global economy.
The conference also demonstrated that collaboration had become essential to the industry’ s future. No single organisation could deliver the infrastructure required for the AI era independently. Success depended upon cooperation between utilities, governments, hyperscale cloud providers, telecommunications companies, engineering firms, equipment manufacturers and renewable energy developers.
That interconnected approach was evident throughout the programme. Representatives from Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft shared the stage with infrastructure providers including Equinix, ODATA, Cirion Technologies, Ascenty and Elea Data Centers. They were joined by specialists in cooling, power management, engineering and renewable energy, illustrating how broad the digital infrastructure ecosystem had become.
Government participation reinforced the sector’ s strategic importance. Officials from Chile’ s Ministry of Energy joined electricity authorities and regional industry associations to discuss policies supporting long-term investment while balancing environmental responsibilities and national energy security. Those conversations highlighted the reality that future competitiveness would depend as much upon effective public policy as technological innovation. Of course, enthusiasm alone would not guarantee success.
