Cooling technologies presented another challenge. Traditional air-cooled environments increasingly struggled to support high-density AI computing. Operators therefore examined liquid cooling, advanced thermal management systems and more efficient facility designs capable of reducing energy consumption while supporting increasingly powerful processors.
These discussions demonstrated how rapidly infrastructure priorities had evolved. Data centres were no longer judged solely by the amount of available floor space or rack capacity. Increasingly, they were evaluated according to energy efficiency, resilience, environmental performance and their ability to support AI applications at scale. Perhaps the conference’ s greatest achievement was illustrating how much the regional market had matured.
Only a short time ago, industry discussions frequently focused on convincing global investors that Latin America deserved attention. During the Santiago conference, the emphasis shifted towards managing expansion, accelerating delivery and ensuring that infrastructure development kept pace with extraordinary demand.
That represented an important milestone. Rather than asking whether investment would arrive, delegates concentrated on how best to deploy it. Market conversations increasingly focused on operational excellence, long-term sustainability and building ecosystems capable of supporting innovation over decades rather than years.
For investors, the conference reinforced confidence that Latin America continued offering substantial long-term opportunities. Enterprise Digital Transformation, cloud migration, financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, telecommunications and public sector modernisation all continued driving demand for additional capacity. Artificial intelligence simply accelerated trends that were already reshaping regional technology investment.
Importantly, investors increasingly evaluated entire national ecosystems rather than isolated projects. Reliable electricity, skilled engineering talent, predictable regulation, international connectivity and renewable energy availability collectively influenced investment decisions. Those wider considerations increasingly determined where new campuses would be built and how rapidly projects could move from planning into construction. The conference also suggested that Latin America had the opportunity to become more than simply a consumer of artificial intelligence.
Continued investment in data centres, connectivity, renewable energy and digital skills created the possibility that AI applications would increasingly be developed, trained and deployed within the region itself. Such a transition would strengthen local innovation, encourage technology entrepreneurship and reduce dependence on overseas infrastructure.
That shift carried significant economic implications. Countries capable of hosting advanced AI infrastructure would attract research, software development, high-value employment and additional foreign investment. Digital infrastructure therefore became not merely an enabler of technology but a foundation for broader economic growth.
The event also highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum. Building worldclass digital infrastructure required long-term planning extending well beyond individual investment cycles. Governments, utilities and private industry would need to continue working together to ensure that energy supplies, connectivity and regulatory frameworks evolved alongside rapidly changing AI technologies.
The discussions in Santiago suggested that many of those foundations were already taking shape. While considerable work remained, the region appeared better positioned than ever to capitalise on accelerating global demand for AI infrastructure. •
