Technological sovereignty starts with the national industry
Flavio Costa, Flávio Costa, Managing Partner, Daten Tecnologia
Discussions about technological sovereignty have been redefining the way nations look at their industries. Considering rising geopolitical tensions, unstable global supply chains and rapid advances in areas such as AI and cybersecurity, technology has come to occupy an even more important space in the decisions that are shaping the future of economies.
In this scenario, technological sovereignty is materialising in more structural choices, such as a country’ s ability to maintain a truly strong technology industry. When there are internal investments in the development of essential innovations, such as robust hardware, specialised systems and software, the nation is guaranteed real conditions to act with more autonomy, reducing weaknesses common to those who need foreign technologies in excess and expanding the capacity to respond to changes.
Relying primarily on external providers for critical devices, infrastructure and solutions means taking risks of supply disruption, exposure to foreign policies, currency volatility and limitations on technological evolution. Having a robust industry allows you to mitigate these threats, ensuring more predictability and control of the innovation chain.
By integrating knowledge, engineering and adaptation skills to the real needs of the local market, understanding the entire operating environment, its constraints and requirements, the national industry develops more adequate, resilient and reliable solutions. These technologies are designed to operate under real-world conditions and not just in ideal scenarios.
This competitive differential, which makes it possible to mould technology to the concrete demands of the territory, infrastructure and organisations, cannot be imported.
In the case of Brazil, this debate gains even more importance. Considering its size, diverse strategic markets including agribusiness, energy, financial services and the public sector and a growing volume of data being generated daily, the country cannot depend only on external technology to sustain such complexity.
Therefore, the Brazilian industry has been building a technological base that responds to current demands and that must evolve continuously, including the production of equipment and systems capable of being used in conjunction with major global technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Cloud, for example, already present in everyday business.
It is worth noting that digital sovereignty is not built only with infrastructure or systems.
Technological sovereignty is not isolation. It even presupposes the ability to integrate with these foreign innovations, but without losing the power of choice, to decide paths, evolutions and strategies.
Strengthening the national industry is, therefore, increasingly consolidating Brazil’ s ability to maintain control over its own systems, its infrastructures, its data and its economy. In an increasingly unpredictable global environment, local production has become an element of economic and strategic security.
It is worth noting that digital sovereignty is not built only with infrastructure or systems. Human development is fundamental to this process. The training of technically qualified professionals is the basis for sustaining the continuous evolution of strategic innovations.
Just as a nation cannot rely solely on external solutions, it also needs to ensure that the knowledge and skills needed to develop, operate and evolve these technologies remain in the country.
Continuing to invest in its own technology manufacturing is allowing Brazil to absorb transformations and advance consistently, even in the face of instabilities from abroad. The intention with this is to ensure that the future can be faced with solidity, making the country a protagonist of innovation and not just a consumer of global technological innovations. • www. intelligentcio. com
