Siemens Mobility to digitalize São Paulo Metro Line 4-Yellow extension with advanced driverless technology

Siemens Mobility has been selected by Motiva to deliver advanced signalling technology for the extension of São Paulo’ s Line 4-Yellow, strengthening one of Latin America’ s most significant urban rail projects.

The expansion will extend the continent’ s first fully automated, driverless metro line while supporting Brazil’ s wider Digital Transformation and sustainable transport ambitions.
The project will extend the existing route by 3.3 kilometres through new doubletrack tunnels, linking the current terminus at Vila Sônia-Professora Elisabeth Tenreiro with a new terminal at Taboão da Serra. The extension marks the first time São Paulo’ s Metro network will reach beyond the city’ s administrative boundaries, bringing rapid public transport to more than 280,000 residents in the neighbouring municipality.
Once operational, the new section is expected to carry around 110,000 passengers each day. Journey times between Estação da Luz and Taboão da Serra are expected to be approximately 26 minutes, improving regional connectivity while encouraging greater use of public transport and reducing road congestion.
Siemens Mobility will supply a complete signalling portfolio, including its Trainguard MT Communications-Based Train Control( CBTC) system, electronic interlocking, telecommunications, operational supervision and Grade of Automation 4( GoA4), the highest level of unattended train operation.
Six trains will also be equipped with CBTC technology, ensuring seamless integration with the existing network.
The project combines expertise from several international locations. The interlocking system will be produced in Germany, the CBTC technology will be supplied from France and elements of the telecommunications systems will come from Italy before final integration is completed in Brazil.

When completed, the extension will increase Line 4-Yellow’ s total length to 16.1 kilometres and add two stations, Chácara do Jockey and Taboão da Serra.
Originally launched in 2010, Line 4-Yellow became Latin America’ s first fully automated metro service and now carries approximately 740,000 passengers each day. Operating with headways of just 90 seconds and punctuality and availability close to 100 %, the line remains a benchmark for automated urban rail, connecting residential, commercial and cultural districts while supporting São Paulo’ s decarbonization goals and future transport growth. •
