CPFL Energia and TIM partner to build Brazil’ s largest private smart grid communications network

CPFL Energia and TIM have formed a strategic partnership to deploy what they describe as the largest private communications network in Brazil’ s electricity sector, supporting the Digital Transformation of energy distribution across the country.

Backed by an investment of R $ 60 million, the project will connect 65 substations and 2,500 smart grid devices managed in real time through CPFL Energia’ s Integrated Operations Centres( COI) in São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul.
The new infrastructure is expected to improve the efficiency and reliability of electricity distribution for around 980,000 customers across an area covering 51,000km ².
TIM will deploy and integrate the end-to-end telecommunications infrastructure, including a dedicated private communications network using the 450MHz radio frequency band to support CPFL Energia’ s critical operations.
“ We are building the foundation for the next generation of energy distribution. By investing in our own robust communication network, we are taking a crucial step towards making our operation even smarter, more resilient and better prepared for the challenges of the energy transition. The biggest beneficiary is the customer, who will have a system capable of responding much more quickly to any event,” said Luís Henrique Ferreira Pinto, Vice President of Regulated Operations, CPFL Energia.
Although largely invisible to consumers, the technology is designed to deliver tangible improvements to everyday life.
By continuously monitoring the electricity distribution network and identifying faults in real time, CPFL Energia will be able to perform remote switching operations, even during adverse conditions.
In practical terms, this means power outages caused by storms, accidents or other disruptions can be restored more quickly, reducing downtime and improving service reliability.
The communications platform will also support the deployment of additional smart grid technologies, including automatic reclosers and voltage regulators, while creating the foundation for the future largescale rollout of smart meters.
Over time, this is expected to enable a more digital, transparent and interactive relationship between customers and the utility.

Initially, the network will connect approximately 2,500 devices across around 50 municipalities within CPFL Energia’ s concession areas in São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul.
In São Paulo, the deployment will include the regions of Franca, Miguelópolis, Sorocaba and Ibiúna. In Rio Grande do Sul, it will cover Uruguaiana, Alegrete, Itaqui, São Borja and Santa Maria.
These locations were selected because enhanced field communications can significantly improve service continuity indicators, including DEC and FEC, while increasing operational efficiency and improving the quality of service experienced by customers.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2029 and has been designed to scale, with the capability to connect up to 50,000 smart grid devices simultaneously as demand and urban development continue to grow across Brazil. •
