Energy constraints delaying Mexican AI infrastructure expansion

Electricity availability, rather than investment, is becoming the primary obstacle to Mexican AI infrastructure growth.

Developers now face delays linked to power generation, transmission, distribution and grid interconnection.
Installed operational capacity increased from 115MW in 2024 to 235MW in 2025 before reaching 279MW in 2026. Despite that progress, the country remains well behind the Mexican Data Center Association’ s goal of reaching 1.5GW by 2030, requiring annual additions exceeding 300MW.
Industry leaders highlighted the issue during the National Energy and Sustainability Forum 2026, saying stronger electricity infrastructure is essential to sustain future digital investment.
Juan Carlos Mondragón, president of MEXDC, said Mexico has the potential to become a regional digital infrastructure leader but requires resilient energy systems and specialized talent.
Queretaro remains the center of the country’ s expansion, hosting about 72 % of installed capacity. While the concentration has attracted suppliers, engineering firms and telecommunications providers, it has also intensified pressure on the regional grid.
AI is increasing energy demands further because advanced workloads require higher power densities, sophisticated electrical systems, liquid cooling and greater redundancy. As a result, developers are increasingly constrained by grid capacity instead of financing.
Improving transmission, distribution and interconnection processes are now seen as critical to maintaining Mexico’ s competitiveness as global AI infrastructure investment accelerates. Expanding renewable energy, energy storage and modern grid infrastructure will also play a key role in supporting future data center development.

The platform also delivers contextual guidance during customer interactions, reducing time spent searching across multiple systems and organizing customer information.
