PROJECT ROUND-UP

SIGET, El Salvador’ s telecommunications regulator, has selected Liberty Networks to design, construct, deploy and operate the nation’ s first submarine cable system. The new 1,800-kilometer cable will connect El Salvador directly to major international connectivity hubs, significantly expanding highspeed internet capacity while strengthening network resiliency and redundancy.
This landmark initiative represents a transformative step for the country’ s digital infrastructure. At present, El Salvador depends entirely on terrestrial connections through neighboring countries, leaving international connectivity vulnerable to outages and congestion. The introduction of a direct subsea link will diversify routes, improve reliability and deliver substantially greater bandwidth to support growing demand across government, enterprise, and consumer services.
By enabling faster, more resilient connectivity, the project will enhance access to global digital platforms, cloud services and emerging technologies. It will also help create a more competitive environment for innovation, investment and economic growth, benefiting El Salvador’ s approximately 6.3 million citizens and strengthening the country’ s position within the regional digital ecosystem.
“ We are proud to have been selected for this historic project that will advance El Salvador’ s digital future,” said Ray Collins, Liberty Latin America’ s Senior Vice President of Infrastructure and Corporate Strategy.
“ We thank SIGET for their trust and look forward to the next phase of work to deploy the country’ s first submarine cable. This investment goes beyond building critical infrastructure – it lays the foundation for long-term economic growth, innovation and opportunity for all Salvadorans.”
Liberty Networks brings extensive experience in the design, deployment and operation of complex subsea cable systems across the Americas, delivering proven performance, security and operational excellence. That expertise is said to be instrumental in ensuring the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of El Salvador’ s first international subsea connection.
The new system is expected to enter service in the second half of 2028.
