Mintel strengthens connectivity in mining areas with free digital point in Morales, El Oro, Ecuador

In the heart of the mining sector of the Morales parish, El Oro province, the Morales Free Digital Point was inaugurated, reaffirming the commitment of the National Government, through the Ministry of Telecommunications and the Information Society, to reducing the digital divide in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
The event was attended by the Vice Minister of Information and Communication Technologies, Ricardo Gutiérrez, who expressed his satisfaction with this initiative, which promotes Digital Transformation and access to fundamental rights such as Digital Education. With this new space, the province of El Oro now has 51 active spaces, benefiting more than 187,000 residents and strengthening the comprehensive development of 14 cantons and 51 parishes.
This digital hub will directly benefit more than 692 residents of the mining sector and surrounding areas, providing them with free Internet access, technological training, digital support and tools that boost productivity and learning.

The opening ceremony was attended by local authorities from the Portovelo canton and the Morales parish, along with community leaders and citizens who celebrated the opening of this space, the result of a collaborative effort between the state and the communities.

Pronatel collaborates with 17 regional governments to expand digital connectivity in rural areas

The National Telecommunications Program( Pronatel) in Peru, an agency of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, is developing a framework agreement for inter-institutional cooperation with 17 regional governments, with the goal of co-ordinating efforts aimed at the development, sustainability and utilization of telecommunications projects deployed in rural areas of the country.

During the first working meeting, which was held virtually, Pronatel’ s Executive Director, Alain Dongo Quintana, stated that this framework agreement aims to reduce the digital divide and guarantee the operational continuity of the installed infrastructure, promoting its use for the social, educational, productive and economic benefit of the population.
“ Our commitment, both to you as representatives of the regional governments and to us as Pronatel, is to those Peruvians who currently lack access to telecommunications. We will join forces to consolidate and promote projects that will allow them to stay digitally connected,” said Dongo Quintana.
He added that these meetings with representatives of regional governments create a space for greater trust and openness so they can express their needs, challenges and priorities.
“ We are willing to support, subsidize and coordinate concrete solutions to ensure the continuity, sustainability and effective use of telecommunications services for the benefit of their citizens,” he said.
At this virtual meeting, which was attended by 17 regional governments and nearly 50 representatives, Pronatel’ s progress and efforts in rural connectivity and closing the digital divide were presented.
