Everything indicates that the proliferation of APIs will continue to expand in 2024 and the challenge of protecting these critical languages , too . “ Today it is practically unfeasible to conduct digital business without consuming and publishing APIs ,” said Hilmar Becker , Regional Director , F5 Brazil .
“ Ecosystems such as Open Finance , the spread of SuperApps and the 24x7 connection between applications from different companies explain this dependence .
This evolution is happening in a disorderly way , with organizations first consuming and publishing APIs to only then address the challenge of protecting these languages .
There are situations in which , out of every 10 companies that use APIs , only one has mapped and authenticated its APIs , being clear about which APIs are legal and which are Shadow APIs that should be expelled from the development belt ”.
The picture becomes even more challenging on understanding that the operation of AI platforms such as ChatGPT is based on LLMs – this language uses APIs to share and consume structured and unstructured data with third parties .
The SOAS 2024 study also reveals that approximately 90 % of organizations use hybrid cloud with 38 % of respondents saying they deploy their applications and APIs in up to six clouds .
“ This reality increases the complexity of managing an environment based on clouds that are completely different from each other . From operation to billing , everything changes from cloud to cloud . This increases the vulnerability to attacks and makes it difficult to protect this whole ,” said Kleython Kell , Solutions Engineer , F5 Brazil .
In 2023 , only 20 % of respondents worked with up to six different environments , including on-premises sites , Edge Computing and public clouds .
In a multiple-choice response , leaders surveyed said that adopting the multicloud model brings management problems ( 34 %), makes it difficult to migrate applications between multiple clouds ( 32 %), affects performance optimization ( 31 %) and ultimately prevents the adoption of security policies consistently across all clouds ( 31 %).
Finally , the SOAS 2024 study looks at the gains that AI based cybersecurity technologies are bringing to CISOs .

• 35 % adopt this strategy to automatically adjust security policies and generate new defense configurations to address detected threats .
