BRAZIL
Nine out of 10 Argentines under 40 now use digital wallets , according to BBVA Bank .
The Brazilian Senate has delayed voting on a Bill to regulate AI tools for further debate over its impact on the tech sector .
This is recognised as a huge increase irom 2020 when only 4 % paid using QR codes .
The rise corresponds with findings from Argentina ’ s National Institute of Statistics and Census that show 89 % of Argentines use smartphones and 88 % have internet access , helping modernize financial services .
“ The greater adoption of digital wallets among young people allows us to think that their use will be increasingly widespread ,” said Joaquín Molina from the consulting firm Taquion .
Data from Taquion also shows that 55 % of Argentines use digital wallets for shopping at local stores – 38 % for supermarket purchases – with four out of ten users preferring this payment method for the rewards offered .
In March , following the guidelines of the of the Financial Action Task Force ( FATF ), Argentina drafted a law to regulate cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets , working closely with the private sector .
Opposition senator Marcos Rogério proposed the postponement , warning that the bill ’ s bureaucracy – requiring rigorous documentation and state analysis for all systems – could hinder technological development .
Alan Nicolas , founder of the Lendár . IA Community and an AI expert , echoed these concerns saying the need for legislation to protect against AI misuse had to be set against stifling innovation .
The push for AI regulation in Brazil stems from fears as to its disruptive potential – especially the spreading of false information during elections .
Brazil ’ s Superior Electoral Court ( TSE ) has mandated AI-created content identification .
The next vote on the Bill is expected only after Brazil ’ s 2024 municipal elections .
