Editor’ s Note

Welcome to the latest edition of Intelligent CIO LATAM. Artificial Intelligence may live in the cloud, but the race to dominate it is increasingly being fought on the ground. Power, land, cooling, connectivity and resilience are becoming the hard currency of the AI economy. The organisations capable of securing them will have an increasingly important advantage as computing requirements accelerate.

Few developments illustrate that shift better than TERRANOVA’ s Campus Campinas in Brazil. Built specifically for AI workloads, the development will combine liquid cooling with up to 386 MW of IT capacity and expansion potential reaching 1 GW. This is infrastructure on an industrial scale and demonstrates how dramatically AI is rewriting the data centre blueprint. The significance goes beyond one campus. Latin America has an opportunity to become more than a consumer of the AI revolution. Projects capable of supporting high-density computing could give the region a larger role in the physical infrastructure underpinning it( p14).

But this issue also demonstrates that the infrastructure transformation reaches far beyond data centres. At Chile’ s Gregorio Refinery, Capstone Energy + is increasing on-site microturbine generation from 1.4 MW to 2.2 MW, illustrating the growing importance of distributed, resilient power at critical industrial sites( p24).
Infrastructure is simultaneously becoming more global. FreeCast’ s agreement to add 28 Brazilian television channels from RBTI demonstrates how technology platforms can combine local content with global distribution, creating digital ecosystems capable of crossing traditional geographic boundaries( p35).
There is, however, another consequence of this transformation( p18). As infrastructure becomes connected, it becomes exposed. The evolution of the UPS captures that tension perfectly. Once principally an insurance policy against electrical disruption, intelligent UPS systems now incorporate IoT connectivity, cloud platforms and remote monitoring. That brings greater visibility and control, but it also introduces firmware, credentials and remote access into the security equation. The distinction between physical and digital infrastructure is disappearing. That may ultimately be the more important technology story. AI is forcing businesses to rethink computing, but the consequences reach much further: into electricity generation, cooling systems, networks, industrial equipment and cybersecurity. The next phase of Digital Transformation will therefore not be won by software alone. Behind every intelligent system sits an increasingly sophisticated physical machine. And that machine is becoming strategic.
