Integrated infrastructure gains momentum

Integrated platforms now account for roughly one quarter of new modernisation projects, a significant increase compared with the beginning of the decade. The appeal is straightforward. Instead of managing separate compute, storage and networking platforms, organisations can deploy integrated architectures that reduce implementation complexity while simplifying ongoing management. For companies operating with limited technical resources, these platforms also shorten deployment times and reduce operational overhead.
The report suggests integrated systems could represent almost half of total modernisation spending by 2035 as enterprises increasingly favour pre-validated infrastructure bundles over individually sourced hardware.
Edge computing moves beyond the pilot stage
Another significant trend identified by IndexBox is the growing adoption of edge computing. Manufacturing facilities and energy operators are increasingly deploying local processing nodes that reduce latency while allowing operational data to be analysed closer to where it is generated.
The report estimates that between 15 and 20 % of industrial modernisation projects now incorporate edge computing capabilities. For sectors such as oil and gas, utilities and advanced manufacturing, these deployments are becoming increasingly important as organisations connect more sensors, industrial controllers and automation platforms.
Rather than sending every data stream back to a central data centre, edge architectures enable faster decision-making while supporting resilience during network disruptions.
