INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY

Rohde & Schwarz, Qualcomm and Motorola demonstrate successful 5G Broadcast compatibility in Brazil

Rohde & Schwarz, Qualcomm Technologies and Motorola have successfully demonstrated a real-world proof-ofconcept for 5G Broadcast in Brazil – confirming secure and reliable interworking with existing mobile services.

At SET Expo the consortium has showcased how television broadcasting and new revenue-generating services can be delivered directly to compatible mobile devices without disrupting traditional cellular or digital broadcast operations.
The demonstration leveraged duplex gap broadcasting, enabling high-power, wide-area coverage while avoiding interference with regular 5G mobile traffic and terrestrial digital television signals. This approach highlights the efficiency of 5G Broadcast as a complementary technology that can coexist seamlessly with current network infrastructures.
Brazil’ s president has announced the country’ s decision to transition to a TV 3.0 digital ecosystem.
This shift is supported by Article 4 of the Brazilian Presidential Decree which permits the adoption of complementary technologies designed to enable mobile broadcasting.
Within this framework, 5G Broadcast allows broadcast television content to be received directly on enabled smartphones and other mobile devices, expanding access and opening new service possibilities.
For the field trial, Rohde & Schwarz installed an R & S TLU9 transmitter connected to an EFTX antenna at the transmission site on Paulista Avenue, São Paulo. Local specialist LM Telecomunicações managed the deployment while Qualcomm Technologies supplied a test device along with technical expertise.
The live 5G Broadcast stream was successfully received on Motorola Razr 50 and Moto Edge Plus smartphones.
The signal demonstrated strong performance not only inside the SET Expo venue at the Centro de Convenções, approximately five kilometers from the transmitter location in central São Paulo, but also throughout the busy streets connecting the two areas.
Importantly, after a full month of continuous operation, no interference with existing mobile networks or broadcast services was reported.
“ This demonstration confirms that 5G Broadcast is a viable solution for delivering mobile television and a broad range of value-added services without impacting existing networks,” said Thiago Nakagawa, Head of Rohde & Schwarz Broadcast in Brazil.
“ Qualcomm Technologies is proud to collaborate with industry leaders such as Rohde & Schwarz and Motorola on this successful 5G Broadcast demonstration,” said Lorenzo Casaccia, Vice President, Technical Standards at QUALCOMM Europe.
“ The project highlights the potential of 5G Broadcast to deliver rich, reliable and engaging mobile media experiences to consumers across Brazil.”
“ Motorola remains committed to advancing mobile innovation and 5G Broadcast represents a significant step forward for the industry,” said Martin Errante, LATAM Portfolio Director at Motorola.
“ By working closely with Qualcomm and Rohde & Schwarz, Motorola reinforces its leadership by testing specially prepared devices to validate the technology, demonstrating our dedication to delivering next-generation connectivity experiences that support Brazil’ s future broadcasting ecosystem.”
The successful proof-of-concept marks an important milestone for broadcasters, mobile operators and policymakers, illustrating how scalable mobile broadcasting can enhance public information, emergency alerts, live events and interactive services while maximizing spectrum efficiency, encouraging innovation and supporting sustainable growth across Brazil’ s evolving digital media landscape. • www. intelligentcio. com
