EDITOR’ S NOTE

Welcome to the latest edition of Intelligent CIO LATAM. This month we lead on Brazil’ s BR. Digital expanding network capacity with Ciena WaveLogic 6.

Brazil’ s growing demand for high-capacity connectivity is driving operators to deploy cuttingedge optical technologies to enhance network performance and scalability.
On p14, Rodrigo Alfonso, Vice President of Operations at BR. Digital, tells us how the adoption of WaveLogic 6 Extreme enables ultra-high-speed transmission, optimises spectrum efficiency and reduces energy consumption across the company’ s national network. This strategic upgrade positions BR. Digital to meet evolving customer and market requirements while supporting emerging, data-intensive applications and attracting global hyperscalers.
A new report from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean( ECLAC) and Chile’ s National Center for Artificial Intelligence( CENIA) shows rapid growth in AI uptake across Latin America but highlights widening gaps in investment, governance and specialist talent.
The third edition of the Latin American Artificial Intelligence Index( ILIA 2025), a pioneering tool that systematically measures the level of preparedness, adoption and governance of AI in 19 countries of the region, is based on more than 100 sub-indicators organised into three dimensions – enabling factors; research, development and adoption and governance.
We turn back to Brazil on p35 where Google Cloud has one of its most significant AI expansions in Latin America to date underway – with new infrastructure, tools and partnerships designed to accelerate the adoption of generative AI across Brazil’ s public and private sectors.
The updates signal Google’ s intent to deepen its presence in one of the world’ s fastestgrowing technology markets and position Brazil as a regional hub for AI innovation.
On p28, we look at Nokia and Ecuador’ s Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones E. P.( CNT E. P.) launching the country’ s first commercial 5G mobile network – marking a major step in its Digital Transformation.
That’ s just a sample of what’ s inside – enjoy the read.
Have an innovative month.
Make stuff happen.
On p24, we outline the detailed overview the report provides of progress made with AI in Latin America and the Caribbean – and the challenges the region still faces in this field.
