Gerdau , Brazil ’ s largest steel producer , has completed the implementation of 5G technology , through a dedicated private network , at the Ouro Branco ( MG ) unit , the company ’ s largest plant .

A partnership between Gerdau and Embratel consolidated the public and private 4G / 5G network in the operation .
The project developed by Embratel created an enabling digital infrastructure for the development of the steel industry of the future , including the installation of several towers to cover more than 8,300,000 m 2 of Gerdau ’ s plant .
With the initiative , an IT backbone ( transport network ) was developed for the evolution of the digitalization of operations and the expansion of the possibilities of on-site automation .
The densification of the private LTE 4G and 5G network at the plant already reaches a combined capacity of 4.8 Gbps .
For Gerdau ’ s Industrial Director in Ouro Branco , Marcelo Teixeira , it is a milestone to have the first project for the use of the fifth generation of mobile internet in the steel sector in Latin America .
“ This technology structure will allow Gerdau to accelerate the implementation of Industry 4.0 concepts in Ouro Branco , leveraging Gerdau ’ s automation , productivity , flexibility , visibility , traceability , use of data and security in processes , including planning , production and logistics ,” said Teixeira .
