José Otero , VP , 5G Americas for Latin America and the Caribbean , said : “ The solution to the remaining connectivity gaps , especially in remote and rural areas , requires a multidisciplinary approach involving the public sector at different levels , including local , regional and national governments , as well as the private sector .
“ Multisector commitment is essential to reduce and eliminate the persistent gaps in a society where the importance of connectivity in all spheres of human activities is already evident .
“ In telecommunications , there are no one-size-fits-all solutions for the rural world . The digital infrastructure is under increasing pressure , and there will come a time when operators have to define how to continue providing services to users . In this equation , the rural world must take priority .
“ We must act quickly , or else more than a third of the Chilean population living in rural areas will be out of the digital society ,” said Otero .
Among the alternatives proposed by IDICAM in this scenario are incentives to stimulate investment , funds to subsidize demand and supply and the creation of regional ecosystems with community-based permit holders and service cooperatives .
It is estimated that 83 % of the Chilean surface corresponds to rural municipalities and in the main urban areas there is a high level of competition in the provision of services , with about six operators operating in 7 % of municipalities . However , in 41 % of them , only one operator provides services . p
