Testing has commenced for the Arimao submarine cable , which links Cuba to the French overseas territory of Martinique . This cable was created through a collaboration between Orange , a telecommunications company , and Etecsa , a Cuban state-owned company . The cable ’ s announcement was made in December , following the denial of a separate application to connect Cuba to the US by US regulators . Due to US sanctions and restrictions , Cuba has been unable to establish direct submarine cables to the US , with the exception of a cable to US-controlled Guantanamo Bay . The Arimao cable spans 2,500 kilometers ( 1,555 miles ) and was installed in January , with plans to launch later this year . It will greatly enhance Cuba ’ s connectivity .
