EDITOR ’ S QUESTION
JUAN PABLO BORRAY , BUSINESS
DEVELOPMENT MANAGER FOR LATIN AMERICA AT PANDUIT

Given the restrictions derived from the pandemic and the so-called ‘ new normality ’, the consumption of applications to continue work , study and social interactions increased .

Consequently , there was a proportional increase in the demand for the services provided by the data centers . In this way , the greater the amount of information processed , the greater the energy consumption .
According to ICREA , large data centers generate about 2.5 % of the carbon footprint worldwide . This carbon footprint is the main form of consumption in these locations .
Since about 90 % of energy consumption is not efficient or wasted , it is necessary to intelligently design , maintain and monitor the power and cooling systems and control the consumption of computer equipment in these critical facilities .
Today , several tools help reduce and make energy consumption more efficient . Among them are cooling solutions , environmental strategies and consolidation and virtualization strategies to make better use of equipment , with the latter focused on measurement through infrastructure management tools ( DCIM ).
From an infrastructure point of view , it is necessary to ensure the actual correct consumption of the cooling systems , ensuring their efficiency requires keeping the hot and cold spaces within the data center isolated .
Aisle design should be the minimum required for new installations , ensuring that equipment draws air from the cold aisle and expels it through the hot hall ,
Large data centers generate about 2.5 % of the carbon footprint worldwide .
implying the use of containment solutions , ducts and elements that help guarantee this separation .
It is also necessary to measure existing installations to identify possible hot spots and thus generate strategies through the solutions described above . It is worth mentioning that these solutions are entirely passive , with which we are avoiding additional energy consumption in the data center .
